The tradition begins
Ok so I’ve got a little catching up to do and I’ve just decided to do this on a whim. Being a part of the growing MovieTok community on TikTok I’ve seen a number of people leading up to “Spooky Season” advertising different personalized versions of a 31 days of Horror. It’s probably not that hard to sus out what this means. 31 days in October leading up to the big day on October 31st itself, Halloween. Each day you watch a different horror movie. Now I don’t put myself out there in the TikTok-verse in video format. But I’ve taken to the challenge, albeit informally up until this point, in my own right. As I was sitting here I thought to myself that this would be a good venue for me to collect a few thoughts each day as I undergo this endeavor through the cinematic macabre and report back in with the good, the bad, and the ugly of what I choose to watch.
Thus far it is the third of October as I’m making my announcement of this venture. So I will be spitting out three little reviews of what I’ve been up to so far this evening in an effort to catch up. But before I got ahead of myself I did figure I would jot down a few thoughts on what I’m doing just so it’s clear. I suppose my biggest “rule” if I have never seen. I know this time horror movies I’ve never seen. I know this time of year is rife with classics that are easy to go to. The franchises abound just as much as the solo classics. I’m sure I will pepper in some of the creature comforts of the season in my journey but ideally they will be paired with at least one new item on the menu as well. I’m trying to mix it up between old and new horror movies. I don’t tend to do a lot of gore so that probably won’t make my list much. I know the “Terrifier” movies have been hot commodities as of late but I doubt Art the Clown will grace my screen. I’ve already been warned that “Skinamarink” is a snoozefest so I think I’ll pass on it as well. And before you get all up in arms, I KNOW it’s different. I appreciate and even applaud what the filmmakers did there. And while I know I want to share in whatever love you have for that film, made up person I’m talking to, I already know I don’t fit in the box of someone who will enjoy it so I’m simply passing on it instead of wasting my time.
Outside of that, most everything is probably in play for me. I’m always open to any recommendations as I don’t necessarily have my path plotted out just yet. I’m taking it a day at a time and figuring out what works in the moment. I’m looking forward to finding some new movies I enjoy while catching some classics I’ve missed along the way as well. Mentally I’m trying to roam those 90’s VHS shelves in the horror section for everything that was off limits to me once upon a time that’s now totally fair game. And whatever the flick of the day is, I’ll do my best to enjoy it all in good spirits as much as possible. I know I’ve got some horrible ones already on my list that I want to check out. Sometimes that “so bad it’s good” works out perfectly but other times it really is a swing and a miss. But on that note, I think I’ve introduced this ghastly grift well enough to kick it off properly. So happy haunting, Cinemaster fans.
